The two ladies were in deep shock as soon as the guard delivered the message and left.

Whaaat?? Her restriction has been lifted already?? So soon? What happened??

Kaylan turned to look at Jaden who was already staring at her.

“Hey; what do you think happened? Do you think your father has given into his demands?” Jaden asked curiously.

“Of course, not” Kaylan answered sharply.
“I know my father, Jaden. That man doesn’t care about me one bit. He’s never going to make even the tiniest sacrifice for me. Never”. She huffed and stood up to go face the window.

“So….do you think Xander had a change of heard on his own?” Jaden asked as she stood up as well and went closer to her.
“Do you think…. your words somehow… made him have a change of heart?”

“I don’t know. Is that even possible? Does someone like Xander still have a heart that can be changed?” Kaylan asked, crossing her hands below her chest.

Although, somehow, a voice wouldn’t stop whispering into her ears that her words were really behind it.

She turned from the window to look at Jaden.

“Do you think I should… apologize to him?” She asked, her brows creased.

“What?? Why?” Jaden’s eyes snapped open.

“I don’t know. Maybe to….. apologize to him for what I said. I just have a feeling my words hurt him so much”.

“Well… Apologizing to him is a good idea. But how on earth do you plan on apologizing to someone like Xander?? Do you really have the nerves?” Jaden asked and Kaylan turned around to face the window again.

How can she possibly apologize to him?
Hm. Maybe she had an idea already.

It was so dark already, with the stars dancing in the sky, all around the moon and giving a beatific touch to the atmosphere.

While Jaden was away, Kaylan could be seen in the garden, picking out some colorful flowers and placing them in a bowl on the floor beside her.

She had great plans for the flowers and was hoping it was really going to go down well.

As she picked and placed them in a bowl, so many thoughts flashed through her mind. Like, what would’ve happened if her father didn’t fulfil Xander’s demands and she was still being used as a bait? Would he have killed her or something? But how could someone be so cruel to the extent of using his own wife as a bait without her knowledge?

When she’d heard stories of him being cold hearted and the rest, she never thought it’d be up to that extent. But now she understood. And thinking of it, wouldn’t it be dangerous to continue staying here with him?

“What’re you doing out here so late?” She suddenly heard a male voice from behind and quickly turned to see Asim – Madame Hapitha’s son. Oh.

She feigned a smile as she looked at him.

“Hi. Good evening” she said.

“Good evening, Princess. Shouldn’t you be in your room? Why are you out here alone?” Asim asked, wearing a genuine concern on his face.

“Well, I um… I just need some flowers – as you can see” Kaylan shrugged and Asim dropped to a crouch beside her.

“And .. what does Princess Kaylan need flowers for, huh?” Asim asked teasingly.
“Are you trying to woo your husband or something?”
He had a cute smile – Kaylan suddenly thought.

Kaylan chuckled. She wanted to counter him, but since the flowers were really for Xander, she couldn’t.
But thinking about it, how exactly is she going to give the flowers to him? Would he accept it? Or act grumpy as always?

“So, the flowers are really for Xander, huh?” Asim asked, coming to a conclusion when she didn’t say anything to defend herself.

“Well, yes. Maybe” Kaylan shrugged.

She picked out another flower and dropped it in the bowl. She was looking out for the best.

“Those colors are too bright you know” Asim suddenly said, breaking into her thoughts.
“For someone like Xander, you should go with dark colors like this….”

He picked out a particular flower and held it out to her.
Hm.

“I see. Thank you” she smiled as she collected the flower from him and dropped it in the bowl.

She picked out another, and Asim helped her again. And so it went until she figured she’d had enough.

“I heard about what happened..” Asim said as they stood up together.
“About Lord Xander trying to use you as a bait. Sorry about that’.

“Yes, it’s fine” Kaylan sighed lightly.
“Everything’s fine now”.

Asim looked into the bowl and moved his hands around for a flower.

“I’m still wondering what exactly you plan on doing with these flowers, tho”
He picked out a bright colored flower the bow.
“But I think this would look really good on you”. He added and fixed the flower in her hair – just at the tip.

Kaylan blinked rapidly and let out a light smile.

“Thank you. I’ll take my leave now” she smiled and turned around to leave. And to her surprise, she found Xander standing and staring at them from a distance with some of his guards behind him.

Hold on…

She quickly turned to look at Asim who’d also seen Xander. Was Xander really watching them the whole time??

The flowers! The hell! He wasn’t thinking something else, was he?

She turned and continued staring blankly at him, his eyes completely dark and expressionless.

Cold memories flipped through her mind immediately. And quietly, he turned around and continued walking away with his guards

As Xander stepped out of Kaylan’s room, he felt cold waves blowing all around him.

His hands ere still resting at his back and getting to where the guards were, right in front of her door, he stopped walking.

The guards stood at alert, thinking he actually wanted to pass an order to them or something. But after standing for such a long time, all he did was walk away – without uttering a word.

Jaden had been standing and watching from a distance and as soon as she saw Xander leave the room, her heart couldn’t help but panic. What could’ve happened in there?! He wasn’t looking good at all.

She saw him walking away and without any hesitation,ran towards the room immediately. Luckily, the guars let her pass and getting to the room, she found Kaylan sitting on the bed, looking so dumb with traces of tears on her face.

“Hey!” She called in a whisper, scuttling towards her.
“Are you alright? What the hell happened? Did he…did he hurt you? Why are you crying?” She asked so many questions but got no reply from Kaylan.
Instead, she released some more tears a while later.

Lord Xander walked into his chambers, his heart twisting in his chest.

He normally didn’t know how to express his anger. So, each time he was angry, he’d prefer training or fighting – just to get it out.

But at that very moment, deep in an embittered mind, he couldn’t think of fighting as all he wanted to do was be alone.

He walked in and stood in front of his window, not knowing the exact thoughts to focus on from the so many voices ringing in his head.

Kaylan’s words had stung him really hard in the chest; offended hon so much yet he couldn’t get her punished.

“Unfortunate” the words replayed in his head.
Unfortunate.

He was really unfortunate…. wasn’t he?

He exhaled deeply and looked up at the ceiling, his eyes closed. And so he stayed for a long time, not wanting to move a finger.

Anya couldn’t help but feel so nervous as she sat in the physician’s room, awaiting her return.

Her hands were so sweaty already, anxiety taking the best of her. The result had to be negative; the result had to be negative – she kept reminding herself.

She fidgeted with her hands and shortly, the older woman walked in.

She was a bit short, her hair all white already. But her old age could never make her defect in her job.

“Is it ready?” Anya asked nervously, staring at the woman’s hand.

“Yes, it is” she answered and took a seat in front of Anya.

The whole silence was making Anya grow more anxious.

“My dear child”, she began. “I’ve checked you properly and…. I discover you’re pregnant”.

“Thank you” Kaylan muttered to Jaden as she returned the empty cup to her.
She had to help her with some water to calm her down, and hopefully, it worked.

“So, tell me; what really happened?” Jaden asked enthusiastically as she sat beside her on the bed.
She’d been so eager to know the whole time

Kaylan sniffed and hesitated a little.

“It…has to do with my father” she began. “Xander’s using me as a bait against him to… get something from him”.

Jaden said nothing, not immediately. And that was because she was trying to digest the impossible story.

“Hold on, you’re not being serious, are you?” She scoffed.

“Do you really think I’d joke with something this sensitive?” Kaylan asked.
“Of course, I’m being serious. He’s using me as a bait and that’s the reason he has me locked up here and wouldn’t let me out of the room”

“Whaaat???” Jaden shirked immediately. “Kaylan, this man is far heartless than we thought him to be! How can he even do such a thing??? Use you as a bait! Dear god!”.

Silence descended as Kaylan wasn’t ready to say anything else.

“This is so terrible, Kaylan” Jaden continued.
“Didn’t you try to…. talk to him or anything? Maybe try to beg him or something?”

“I didn’t. Instead, I…. I said something awful to him” she bent her head and said with a pout.

“Really? And what did you say? What did he do?” Jaden inquired.

“Well, I….I told him he was so heartless and that was… probably the reason he’d lost all his wives”.

Jaden gasped immediately, covering her mouth with her palm.

“No! Kaylan!” She flinched.
“Just tell me you’re joking. You didn’t say that to him, did you???”

Kaylan was remorsefully silent.

“Oh! That was too extreme, Kaylan? Didn’t he punish you? Or maybe he will, but not now. You shouldn’t have said such a thing…”

“Well, I had no choice okay? I was just being angry” Kaylan cut in.
“You don’t expect me to feel good after discovering I was being used like a prisoner. I was just angry and… didn’t realize when the words left my mouth. Although…. I feel so terrible for saying them now. His expression…it shows he was deeply hurt. But don’t you think he deserves it?”

“Well, maybe” Jaden shrugged. “But that was extreme. Tongue lashing him with his dead wives and misfortune isn’t entirely a good idea”.

Her words only made Kaylan feel more terrible. Perhaps, she should’ve abused hon with something else, not something that had to do with his dead wives. Oh! Now, she felt really terrible.

“So, what do we do now, Kaylan?” Jaden asked and just then, the door opened with one of the guards walking in.

Jaden’s heart skipped instantly as she thought they were there to punish Kaylan for what she did.

Both Kaylan and Jaden stared keenly at the guard.

“Greetings, Princess” he bowed.
“I’m here to inform you that your restriction has been lifted and you’re free to move around at will” he passed the announcement and left, leaving the two ladies in deep shock.

“My Lord” he bowed.
“Sorry for disturbing, but Princess Kaylan is getting impatient already. She’s requesting to see you and threatens to put up a fight if her request is not granted”.

Xander was quiet for a while, giving a thought to what the guard had said. Well, he had known this would happen, trying to limit her from leaving the house – he’d known she’d grow suspicious and angry.

He exhaled lightly, unveiled the second plate of his meal and turned to the guard.

“I’ll be there” he stated in his deep baritone tone and the guard bowed with gratitude.

“Thank you, My Lord” he said and left.

“I don’t think it was a good idea being so rude to the guard, Kaylan” Jaden said in the room.
“To me, I think you should’ve just stated your request humbly. I mean, what if Lord Xander gets mad at you for being rude to the guard? What if he…?”

“Will you just keep it shut Jaden?” Kaylan snapped. “I did nothing wrong okay? No matter what, I deserve an explanation for being locked up like a prisoner. I surely don’t deserve this punishment”.

Jaden rolled her eyes and was about saying something when the door suddenly went open with one of the guards coming in. At first, they’d thougt he was coming to pass an information, but not until they saw Lord Xander walking in as well.
What???

Jaden was the first to flinch. He came! He really did show up!

Kaylan stood up from the bed where she’d been sitting as well, having mixed thoughts in her head.
First, she felt surprised that Xander really showed up. And secondly, she felt more anxious to know how their conversation would go.

“Greetings, My Lord” Jaden bowed in obeisance, fiddling with her intertwined fingers.

Xander didn’t even spare her a glance as he only kept his gaze on Kaylan who was staring down at the floor.
His hands were crossed at his back, eyes looking so dark.

“Leave us” the cold words escaped his lips and Jaden didn’t need anyone to tell her she was the one being referred to.

Quickly, she left the room with her head bowed. And the only guard in the room followed right immediately. And finally, it was just Xander and Kaylan left in the room.

While Xander stood like an intimidating leader in the room, Kaylan stood in front of him like a child who was about to get a scold from an elder.

“You said you wanted to see me” Xander finally broke the brooding silence, his words sounding like Kaylan had actually committed an offense.

Kaylan summoned enough courage and took her gaze from the floor.

“I…demand to know why I’m being locked up here” she said, her eyes still unable to stare at him.

Xander – as usual – was silent for a moment

“It’s for the best” he suddenly said and those time around, Kaylan had to look at him.

“The best?” She asked with a crumpled look.
“I don’t… I don’t understand. What do you mean it’s for the best?”

Xander took in a light breath and moved an inch.

“I’m trying to protect you, Kaylan. Going out there isn’t safe for you” he said, but Kaylan didn’t seem to buy.

“Really? And it has to get to the extent of locking me up entirely, I can’t even go out to get my own meal? Who exactly are you trying to protect me from in the first place? And are you trying to say they’re here, in the palace? So, why aren’t you being locked up in your room as well??”
Kaylan was beginning to notice some slight changes in Xander’s eyes. Obviously, he didn’t like being challenged.

“Stop yelling at him Kaylan, he might get so angry”. A voice whispered in her head.

Xander’s dark eyes only glinted a little.

“I don’t think you should have a problem with you staying all day in your room, Kaylan” he said. “You should be comfortable here. You have everything you need and will be given everything you ask for”.

He turned towards the door to leave.

“What exactly is going on??” Kaylan didn’t realize when she yelled
“Don’t I even deserve to know?? Tell me what you’re hiding or, I swear, I’m leaving this place!”

Xander snapped and turned to look at her. His hands were still resting at his back.

“I need something from your Father, something that would be of great importance to my community. And I need to keep you here to make sure he gives it to me”. Xander finally told her the truth, stating it matter-of-factly.

Kaylan’s eyes dimmed with comprehension immediately, her lips parted slightly in surprise.
Good saviors! She gasped.

Her eyes starred at Xander’s cold face before going down to the floor. She was a bait! A bait! She was being used as a bait!

For the savior’s sake!!

Now, she understood everything! Now, the entire thing became crystal clear to me. She was being locked up in her room because her father was being blackmailed!! Her life was under a threat and she completely had no idea!

She flinched and looked up at Xander – slowly

“I can’t believe this” she shook her head, the words coming out in whispers.
“I can’t believe this. How dare you use me as a bait against my own father?!”

Xander said nothing, and coldly, he turned around to leave but Kaylan went after him.

“No! You can’t do this to me!! I can’t let you do this to me! You can’t treat me this way!” She rasped as she tried walking pass him to the door, but he pulled her back – so effortlessly.

“You need to stay put” he faciled.

“No! Don’t even tell me to stay put! How can you do this to your own wife?? How dare you use me as a bait?!”
She was already at the verge of tears. But Xander, his expression was as blank as always.

Kaylan tried going out again but still, he pushed her back, restricting her.

“Don’t make me hurt you” his voice came as a mumble.

“You’re so heartless!!” Kaylan cried out, hitting him lightly on the chest.
“Now I know why you’re so unfortunate to lose all your wives!!”

Silence.

It happened so fast; so fast, Kaylan didn’t realize when the words left her mouth. And by the time she did, it was already too late to take them back.

She felt her heart leap a lightly as it suddenly seemed like some ice water had been poured on her.

And Xander – for the first time since she’s known him, she saw his eyes droop right in front of her. Despite how strong he was, those particular words seemed to have melted him.

There was a glint in his eyes as he stared at the floor for the first time, despondency smelling all around him.
And silently, with his eyes still on the floor, he turned around and left.
