“Are you sure I’m looking good enough?” Jaden asked Kaylan as she twirled herself in front of the mirror.

“Stop being impossible, Jaden. We’re only going there to watch a fight.
Oh…. Forgive my manners; I actually forgot you’re single and you’re probably looking out for a husband” Kaylan teased, earning a glare from Jaden as they left the room.

“Do we make use of a horse?” Jaden asked as they walked outside.

“Of course, not I don’t even know how to use a horse. Besides, using a horse right now would create too much suspicions from the guards and I don’t want that. So, we’ll just get a ride outside…” Kaylan replied.

They walked out the gate, strolled down to the market side and there they were able to get a local carriage to ride them to the venue.

Lord Xander stepped out of his carriage, his sheath in his left hand, and Axel behind him.

From where he stood, he could clearly see the arena – a lot of people were gathered all around already, Kings and Queens, Rulers and their wives and mistresses and other citizens from certain villages and communities.

They were around, watching and waiting for the fight.

After having enough observation, Xander proceeded to go forward; But just as he approached the entrance, his eyes came in contact with Prince Berlin’s.
Berlin was also trying to walk in with his own guards when he spotted Xander and suddenly stopped walking. He smirked widely at Xander; then gave this look of *I’m ready for you*. And finally walked in.

Xander gave no reaction as he decided to just proceed, but he suddenly stopped on his tracks when he felt a slight dizziness hit at him.

“My Lord!” Axel called and touched his shoulder.
“Are you alright?”

Xander touched his forehead, wondering what that had been.

“I’m fine” he mumbled and walked away.

The crowd cheered loudly and excitedly as they spotted Lord Xander and Prince Berlin walking into the arena.

Lord Xander was led to his seat while Prince Berlin was led to his. He could see his father, mother and brother all seated on their spaces and staring at him. A grim smile touched his lips. Definitely, he was going to make them proud today. It was only a matter of time before the fight commences….

FEW MINUTES LATER.

And one of the coordinators marched onto the main arena. He was so huge, well built and was known as a popular warrior.

“Are we ready???!!” He yelled and the crowd answered with some loud cheers.
If it had been a hall, it was damn sure the noises would’ve cracked the walls already.

“As we all know” he began, making his voice deep and loud enough.
“It’s a special day for us all, as we’re here to experiencea fierce battle two war Lords. Well, it might not be called fierce for now until it’s begun and our two warriors do their best. But, it’s a fight to the death!!!!”

“Yeahhhhhhhh!” Loud cheers came from the crowd immediately, indicating their thirst for violence.

Lord Xander’s eyes found Berlin’s and he could see the confident smile on his face.
For a second, he’d appeared double; It was only for a second tho as it quickly went back to normal. But, why had he become double? What was happening to his sight?

“Are you ready???!!” The coordinator yelled out, and the crowd answered with their usual response.

“And now, let’s make welcome, to the Powerful warriors!!!

“First, the attacker – Prince Berlin of Melik Kingdom”.

Loud cheers came up as Prince Berlin stood up, confidently, his sheath in his hand.
He walked away from his seat and climbed down until he’d gotten to the middle of the arena where he stood some paces away from the coordinator.

“And now,to the defendant, The Almighty Lord Xander!!” The coordinator called and a louder cheers was heard from the multitude.
It was more like they’d all been waiting for him to be called upon.

But as Xander stood up from his seat, he could feel that strong wave of dizziness hitting hard at him again. If it wasn’t for how strong he was, he sure would’ve lost his stamina.

“My Lord?” Axel called from behind, looking worried. But, Xander said nothing to him as he climbed down to the middle of the arena.

“Almighty Xander indeed” Berlin jibed in his thoughts as he watched him walk down.
He couldn’t wait to humiliate him in the presence of everyone.

“How far till we get there, sire!” Kaylan asked the rider as she sat in the moving carriage with Jaden.

“Just some few minutes, dear. We’re almost there” the elderly man replied and Kaylan heaved a sigh.
She really couldn’t wait to get there already. She just couldn’t tell why she was feeling more scared.

There were just three passengers in the carriage – herself, Jaden and one other woman. Then, the rider at the front.

Jaden; Kaylan’s mind suddenly drifted to her. She’d been so cold and had her head placed on her shoulder.

“Hey, are you alright?” She touched her cheek and asked, but Jaden only nodded slowly.
Could it be hunger? Kaylan thought. Jaden’s never looked so weak before.

She was about asking the rider something when Jaden’s head slipped from her shoulder, and Kaylan looked and noticed she had almost fallen out the carriage.

“Jaden!!” She shrieked in fright, noting she had passed out.
“Jaden!! Jaden!”.

“Hey; what’s going on??” The rider yelled from his seat, also being startled.
He screeched the carriage to a halt immediately and Kaylan quickly dragged Jaden out since there wasn’t enough space in the carriage.

“What’s happening to her?? Please, help me! Help me!!” She cried out as she laid the unconscious Jaden on the floor.
Her eyes were completely shut, her face going pale.
The rider and other woman had also rushed out as well.

“What’s going on?? I didn’t bargain on carrying a corpse!” The rider rasped.

“Please, help me!! I don’t know what’s wrong with her; Jaden!! Please….!” Kaylan cried fearfully and the woman drew close and knelt in front of her.

She forced her eyes open and observed the scelera.

“She’s been poisoned!” She finally said, making Kaylan flinch.
Poisoned?? How possible??

That is…. that is not possible; we both haven’t eaten for….”
Her words were suddenly cut off when she remembered one thing…. one vital thing. The drink from Lord Xander’s room!

She gasped and looked at Jaden immediately. That was the only thing Jaden had tasted; And that was the same thing Lord Xander had tasted as well.

No! No! It can’t be possible! The drink was poisoned!

Kaylan and Jaden got dressed afterwards, both trying to look as simple as possible. No matter what, Kaylan was determined to go watch the match. She wouldn’t let anyone stop her for any reason.

“But, what if Lord Xander eventually gets to know we violated his orders by showing up at the fight?” Jaden asked as she helped Kaylan brush her hair in front of the mirror.

“Oh! Stop thinking negatively, Jaden. He’s never going to find out, Okay? And even if he does, I’ll make sure you don’t get punished. Alright?”

“Fine” Jaden rolled her eyes.
“But…do you realize we haven’t even had breakfast?”

“There’s no time, Jaden. Don’t worry, we’ll find something to eat on our way; bills on me”.

“Mm. If you say so”.

Jaden finished brushing the hair and was about packing it when she noticed Kaylan’s hairpin was missing.

“Where’s your hair pin?” She asked, rechecking the hair to be sure she wasn’t missing it.

“And why are you asking me? It’s always in my hair” Kaylan answered grumpily as she brushed her fingers into the hair. But surprisingly, the hair pin wasn’t there.
Hold on; where could it be?

“Urgh! Don’t tell me you’ve misplaced it, Kaylan. That was the prettiest hairpin you had” Jaden grouse as she left her hair and started looking around on the floor to see if she could’ve misplaced it.
But, it was nowhere in the room.

“Maybe… it’s in Xander’s room” Kaylan suddenly said, recalling the fact that she’s spent over half of the day in Xander’s room the previous day.

“Oh! That could be true. Gut,why do you think it’s there? Did your itch your hair or something?” Jaden asked.

“Of course. When the whole locking up was driving me insane, I can remember itching my hair so many times. So, it’s possible it might’ve fallen off or something”. Kaylan said.

“Oh. But, you know Xander’s left for the fight already. So,we can’t go to his room…”

“Of course, we can”. Kaylan cut her off and stood up, heading to the door.

“Kaylan…! What do you think you’re doing?” Jaden grumbled and ran after her.

“We could just make airbof another hair pin. I think I have a very pretty one in my bag” Jaden said as she followed Kaylan to Xander’s chambers.

“I don’t want any other, Jaden. You already made me fall in love with the hair pin” Kaylan answered in a brisk.
Jaden tried convincing her because she didn’t want her to get into trouble, but being the kind of person she was, Kaylan wouldn’t listen.

They finally arrived at Xander’s chambers and met two guards there.

“Greetings, Princess” the guards greeted with a bow.

“Oh! Greetings to you two. Um.,.. actually, I need to go in there and search for something really important. I need to make use of it right now”. Kaylan said and for a few seconds, the guards hesitated.

“Sorry, Princess. But Lord Xander is not in. You can’t go in now” the guard replied, earning a hard glare from Kaylan.

“I’m not stealing, Okay? You can come in and supervise me if you so wish. I just want to take my hair pin which must’ve fallen off my hair while I was here, yesterday. Besides, isn’t this meant to be My Husband’s room? I’d suggest you get out of my way before your excessive seriousness gets you into trouble”. She rasped.
She spoke so fast, the guards were amazed.

Glancing at each other, they finally came to an agreement and pushed the door open for her.

“Good job” she smiled and walked in with Jaden who was looking like a wet tortoise.

“God! Kaylan; did you really have to be so rude all the time? I know I’m always stubborn and all, but yours is just excess” Jaden grouse, but Kaylan said nothing to her as she started checking the floors carefully.
Oh! What if they’ve swept it away? It better not be.

“Looks like Lord Xander left some tea” She heard Jaden say from behind, but didn’t even look at her as she kept her eyes focused on the floor.

“I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t want to drink it when he returns…..Hm. Tastes so nice”.

Kaylan’s eyes were still glued to the floor and finally, she spotted it beneath the bed.

“Found it!” She beamed as she knelt close to it, stretched her hand and pulled it out.

“Oh! You finally got it? Lucky you” Jaden said,.

“Yeah, good for me, indeed…” Kaylan turned around to show her the pin in excitement, but to her surprise, found Jaden, holding a cup of tea.

“What?? Don’t tell me you’ve been drinking that! Is it yours??” Kaylan tweaked her ear.

“Ouch! Let me go, Kaylan. I didn’t drink all of it’ Jaden grouse and quickly dropped the cup down on the table.

“You’re so unserious. Let’s go” Kaylan huffed and left the room, while Jaden followed.

Hilda walked in with Lord Xander’s meal in a tray, her head bowed and her systems trying so hard to hide her anxiety.

Her hands were nearly shaking.

“G….. Good morning, My Lord” she greeted with a bow.
But Xander didn’t turn to look at her as he just fixed his gaze into space.

“I’m not eating, Hilda” he suddenly said, making her heart skip two beats.
What????

“M…My Lord, I don’t understand’ she stuttered and gulped hard.
“I thought you were going for a fight? You need to have some….”

“Just make me some tea, Hilda” he cut her off, calmly tho.
“Some tea and I’ll be fine”.

Hilda exhaled deeply.
“As you wish, My Lord” she bowed and left the room with the tray.

Kaylan sat quietly on the bed, her hand on her jaw, looking like one in deep thoughts.

Jaden entered not long after with some cake for breakfast.

“Here’. I’m so sure you’ll love these”. She beamed as she placed the cakes on a small table in front of Kaylan.

But Kaylan didn’t even act like she’d seen a thing in front of her.

“Hey; you okay?” Jaden nudged get, but she didn’t give a reply.

“Oh, seriously? Don’t tell me you’re still getting worried about this, Kaylan?” She rolled her eyes.

“Well, what do you expect me to do, Jaden? I just told you; I’m having a bad feeling….”

“Bad feeling about what?” Jaden cut her off, taking the space next to her on the bed.
“About the fight?”

Kaylan nodded.

“Oh, Kaylan! You’re so unbelievable. Prince Berlin is an unfortunate man who’s out for revenge and is definitely going to get it the wrong way. I understand he’s hurt, but challenging Lord Xander to a fight is stupidity. We all know Xander has never lost in a fight. So, clearly, Prince Berlin is only looking for his death” Jaden enthused, and Kaylan took in a deep breath like she’d been convinced.

A few seconds passed, then she asked:
“Can we attend the fight?”

“What?? Are you crazy? Lord Xander doesn’t want you to go. Or, have your forgotten his orders just yesterday?” Jaden flinched.

“Of course, I can’t forget. But…. he won’t know I’ll be there. Besides, he’ll be so busy fighting, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have time to look at his guests” Kaylan rolled her eyes.

“Don’t be so stubborn, Kaylan. I believe Lord Xander had a good reason for sending his chief guard to warn you not to try attending the fight. It was more like he knows you so well and was aware you’re gonna try to do something like this…….”

“Oh! Come on, Jaden. Where’s my best friend that’s ready to break every rule with me? Ready to swim across the ocean with me? Ready to take risks and for my sake?”
She turned and winked at her and Jaden let out a chuckle.

“You know you’re crazy, right?”

“Yessss!! As long as I’m crazy with you!” Kaylan laughed and hugged her.

Prince Berlin could be seen in the room with his sword, sharpening it and fully armoured.

He looked more serious than before, like he’s never been so serious in his entire life.

The door opened shortly with his mother coming in. She was adorned in a long blue gown, but looked really anxious as she walked towards him.

“Mother” Prince Berlin called, but she didn’t say a word until she’d gotten closer enough to hug him.

“Son’ she whispered calmly, stroking his hair.
They maintained that contact for sometime before pulling away.

“Berlin, are you sure about this?” The Queen cooed, touching his cheek.
“You can still back out of this fight, you know? I feel so scared. You know you’re the crowned prince of the Kingdom of Melik”.

“Fear is for the hopeless, mother” Berlin said in an indefatigable voice.
“You have nothing to worry about; I’ll be fine and back with Xander’s head”.

The Queen sighed pathetically and brought out a necklace from her dress.

“Here. Have this on” she put it round his neck for him.

“It’s for luck. My mother gave it to me and it’s helped me out a lot”.

She hugged him again.
“I wish you safe return, Son”.

“Thank you, mother” Berlin replied.

Hilda returned to the room with the tea and bowed as she handed it to Lord Xander. Her heart was still beating rapidly. She didn’t want to do this; didn’t want to put him in any form of danger; but she had no choice.

Xander sighed and took a sip from the cup, and that was the moment Hilda knew there would be no going back. It’s done!
Oh, no. Will she ever be able to forgive herself?

“Is there problem, Hilda?” Lord Xander suddenly asked, wondering why she was still there.

“N… No, My Lord. I’ll take my leave now” she swallowed hard and left the room.

Lord Xander remained there with the tea in his hands, still taking some gulps.
He still couldn’t tell why he was feeling so cold about the fight.

Shortly, the door opened with Axel coming in and even before he spit out the words, Xander already knew why he was there.

“Greetings, My Lord’ he bowed.
“The carriage is ready”.

But Xander said nothing.

Axel was a little confused. He knows Lord Xander to always be the cold type, but that morning, the coldness was kind of different.

“My Lord?” He called. “Is there a problem?”

Xander said nothing immediately as he took in a deep breath and gulped more from the cup.

“It’s just pathetic, Axel” he finally said, dropping the tea cup on the table.
“It’s just pathetic that the Kingdom of Melik has lost two daughters. And now, they’re about to lose a son”.
He picked his sword sheath from the table and walked out of the room.
