Jaden watched the expression on Kaylan’s face as she returned to the room, looking like a…

“Hey”‘ she tapped her arm, but Kaylan said nothing as she just walked pass her and went ahead to sit on the bed, placing her hand on her jaw.

Hmph – Jaden hummed and went closer to her.

“Hey pumpkin what the hell happened out there? Were you able to give the flowers to him?” She asked and Kaylan simply replied with a nod.

“And… what happened? Did he collect them?” She asked and Kaylan replied with another nod.

Oh….

“So, what’s the problem? Why are you looking this way?” Jaden scoffed, finding the whole thing bemusing and Kaylan released her hand from her jaw.

“He collected the flowers, but he was grumpy about it” she said with a pout.

“Grumpy? How?” Jaden asked.

“Although, he thanked me, but he had the guts to issue a warning, telling me he was going to kill me himself if I ever mock him with his past” Kaylan replied and stood up, going to face the window.

“Well… it’s nothing to be angry about, Kaylan” Jaden shrugged. “I mean, if Lord Xander was rude to you, it shouldn’t be a big deal because it’s part of him. Actually, I think you should be lucky he actually collected it”.

“Whatever, Jaden. It isn’t right”. Kaylan huffed, placing her hands on her waist.
“It seems I’ve been ridiculed a lot, hence, lost my value already. And I really need to work on that. I need to gain my respect”.

Jaden’s brows arched.
“And… what’re you talking about?” She asked.

“I want Xander to start seeing the value in me and make him understand I’m not just some cheap commodity that he bought from my father and can treat like trash. I want him to understand I’m Princess Kaylan, and he should actually feel lucky he’s privileged to own someone like me”
She lifted her shoulders, trying to emit some air of royalty, while Jaden almost bursted out laughing.

“I’m really not in the mood to laugh, Kaylan. Just what do you think you’re doing?” Jaden scoffed.

“I know what I’m doing, Jaden. Just wait and see” Kaylan replied and started towards the door.

“Hold on; where are you going?” Jaden asked as she ran after her.
They walked out the door.

“Kaylan, where do you think you’re going?”

“I just want to take a peep at Xander. He should be at the field”. Kaylan replied without looking at her as she continued walking in a hurry.

“The field? And what do you want to see him for? I don’t understand?” Jaden scoffed.

“I have my reasons…”

They continued walking, receiving a lot of bows and greetings from some of the maids they came across and finally, they arrived at the field.

Oops.

Xander could be clearly seen right there at the middle, having a sword fight with a man while the other guards stood around and watched.

“Come on” Kaylan pulled Jaden’s hand and ran away with her, going to stand behind a pole so Xander doesn’t have to see them in any way.

“I don’t get you. You came here to see him, yet you’re hiding from him. Are you for real?” Jaden snapped.

“Just keep shut, Jaden. I don’t remember asking you to come with me in the first place anyway”. Kaylan rolled her eyes and tried focusing on her target.

She watched as Xander fought smartly with the sword. But it didn’t seem more like a fight, but like a training as he’d pause on some occasions to say some words.

“Always attack from the right angle” he commented and used his sword from the right angle.

Kaylan watched keenly, taking note of how handsomely dark he looked even with the fact that he seemed so serious. His sword skills were amazing and in no time, he swept the man off his feet and made him fall hard on the floor.

“Urgh!” The man let out a painful grunt.

“Wow. Xander’s so powerful” Jaden said with a sheepish smile, also staring keenly at him..

“Come to think of it, Kaylan; he’s actually your husband; yet you’ve never acted like his wife. There are a lot of ladies who would want to be in your position, you know?”

Kaylan simply rolled her eyes and continued watching. She was thinking of a perfect way to strategise her plan.

Xander was speaking to his men when one of the messengers showed up, having a script with him.

“My Lord” he called with a bow.
“Sorry to interrupt, but there’s an urgent message for you”.

Xander wanted to get angry for being interrupted, but then he knows the messengers would never interrupt unless it’s very important.

The messenger with his head bowed and the scroll proffered towards Lord Xander and gently, Xander collected it from him.

He unrolled it and read the content, first discovering it was a message from the Kingdom of Pishan.

It was an invitation to a fight in two days time, a sword fight by Prince Berlin.

Hilda – the chief cook – stood in fear as she watched the two boys bring sword out. Her entire body was shaking as she felt her world was about coming to an end.

“Please… Please.. ” tears strolled down her cheeks.

Her lips went shut when she saw Xander coming out of the room.
Oh….

She took her bottom lips into her mouth immediately, suddenly running out of words. Where was he off to, huh? She needed him to be in the room to….make it easier for her. She was still trying to prepare herself.

Her eyes danced around him as he walked towards her direction, taking his usual gentle steps – gentleness that can be deceptive.

He had his sheath in his left arm and wore a black cloth which made Kaylan think he was going to the field to practice – as usual. Does he think of anything else aside war??

She continued staring glumly at him until he’d gotten to where she was. Xander was of course, surprised seeing her there, but being the kind of man he was, he wasn’t ready to ask any questions and just decide it was best to walk away.

Kaylan’s heart gave a mighty leap when she saw him walking away. Hold on; whaaat???

She turned around immediately, going after him.

“Hey!” She felt so stupid for calling him that, but the words had already escaped her lips before she’d realize as Xander stopped and turned to look at her.

Oh ..

“Um… Sorry, I mean… My Lord” she bowed, the flowers dangling in her hand.

Xander stared keenly at her without saying a word, and when Kaylan lifted her eyes to look at him, she felt some sparkles.
That was prolly the first time she was taking a really close and good look at him.
Hm. He had that dark – cold Xander-like expression, but his eyes sparkled with the dark shade around them. And with the black band around his head, it made him more ..

“Is there a problem, Princess Kaylan?” He asked icily, sounding serious and official like he always was.

Kaylan stuttered a little and cleared her throat.

“Um… My Lord” she began. “I wouldn’t really call it a problem but a problem solver”
She paused and proffered the flowers out to him.

“I um… I actually want to apologize to you for… what happened yesterday; the things I said. I never really meant them and hope you can forgive me”
She paused and looked at the flowers again.

“I made this for you and hope you can accept it. They’re beautiful”. She added.

Her heart was beating really fast. But seriously, why does she have to feel anxious? It wasn’t like he was a god or anything. Besides,, she was sure he wasn’t going to reject them. He wouldn’t dare.

For a moment, Xander was silent and just stared at the flowers with a blank expression. That was one thing people didn’t like about Lord Xander – you could never tell what he was thinking from his expression because he had a rare way of cloaking it.

Kaylan was beginning to have doubts as he hesitated in taking the flowers, but finally, he stretched out his hand and collected them.
Oops…! At last.

She didn’t know when she exhaled deeply, making Xander glance at her. It was more like a heavy burden had been taken off her shoulders.

Lord Xander stared at the flowers in his hand, his silence making Kaylan wish she could know what he was thinking at all. And the moment he took a step towards her, she found herself moving back.
Goodness! What was wrong with her?

“Thank you for the flowers” Xander suddenly said, his eyes fixed on them, and not on Kaylan.
“But the next time you mock me with my past…. I might kill you myself”.

He handed the flowers to one of the guards behind him, turned around and continued walking away.

Prince Berlin stood in front of the window with his brother standing beside him.
They both had a drink in their hands.
.
“So, the letter has been sent to Lord Xander already?” Prince Noah asked, giving his brother sometime to sip from his cup.

“Yes. He should receive it soon”. Berlin replied.
It was a letter of invitation – inviting him to the sword fight.

No matter what, he was sure Xander would never reject the invitation because it was only going to be a slap to his face. That man has got too much pride and wouldn’t want the world to know he chickened out of a fight. And that was going to be his first weapon against him. He really couldn’t wait to humiliate him in the presence of everyone.

“But Berlin,” Noah called. “What exactly are your plans? How do you intend defeating Xander on the battle field? It’s known in all records – Xander has never lost a battle before – never”

“He will -this time around” Berlin snapped in.
“You should know me, Noah; I’m not a fool. I knew the kind of man Xander was before asking for a fight from him. I’d wanted you to join me in it, but since you’re too scared, it’s fine. I’ll do it alone. But one thing’s for sure, Xander’s going down in my hands. I have my plans already – I’ll make him go on his knees right in front of me – just before I slash my sword through his neck. It’s a promise”.

Kaylan blinked rapidly as soon as Lord Xander walked away.
He didn’t see anything, did he?

She turned back to look at Asim.

“I really need to go now”.

“Of course. Goodnight”

And she scurried off.

Returning to her room, she thought about Xander. Why was he having such a cold look on when he saw them?

And recalling the look on his face, it made her suddenly have some double thoughts about giving the flowers to him. No; no matter what, she really needed to give the flowers to him.

She got to the room and found Jaden with the ash – just like she’d asked for.

“What took you so long huh? Jaden asked.
“Anyway, I hope this should be enough?”

“Yes. Thank you” Kaylan collected the ash from her and walked over to the table to set to work.
And as she did, Jaden noticed the slight change in her mood.

King Moreh was sitting comfortably in his room, re-reading the letter sent by Xander. He wouldn’t deny being amused as he wondered what could’ve possibly changed Xander’s mind. Why did he suddenly withdraw his threats and stated in the letter that he was no longer forcing him to sign the petition? Why?

Lord Xander has always been a man of his words – too cruel and changeless and that was the reason King Moreh couldn’t understand why he’d changed this mind all of a sudden.

Well, it was a good thing he finally changed his mind because he wasn’t ready to sign the petition. He didn’t sign it then, and wasn’t ready to sign it at anytime at all.

There was a knock on his door and giving the go ahead, the door opened immediately with the Queen rushing in – Kaylan’s mother.
Oh…

“Your Highness” she bowed with some intensity in her tone.
“Sorry if I’m disturbing your quiet time”

“It’s okay, Hapitha. You can have a seat” the King replied, but Hapitha wasn’t there to to sit.

“Your Highness, my mind can’t be at rest. I’ve heard the news about Lord Xander threatening you with Kaylan’s life and it’s really of great concern to me”.

“Xander has taken back his words” King Moreh cut in calmly.
“He’s withdrawn his threats and made it clear he’s no longer using coercion”.

“I know, but ..” she paused and scoffed.
“That isn’t enough reason to let it go, your Highness. We need to get Kaylan out of there. What if he decides to do this again?”

“He won’t, Hapitha?”

“He won’t? But how can you be so sure? Nobody was expecting this when it happened…”

“This shouldn’t be your concern, Hapitha. Kaylan is fine and I don’t think you should worry about it anymore. She’s better off being married to Xander”. The King said and a glint of anger flashed through Hapitha’s eyes.

“She’s better off being married to someone who can kill her at anytime?” She asked.
“Maybe you’re not even concerned about this because no matter the amount of threat Xander imposes on Kaylan’s life, you’re never going to care or bend in to Xander’s will because you DON’T care about her”.

King Moreh’s eyes dimmed. How dare she raise her voice on the King?

“Of course, how would you care about her when she’s just one out of your many other children, dancing around you? How can I even expect you to care about her?!”

Queen Hapitha could be fearless at some point, and that was where Kaylan had gotten her rascality from.

Tearfully, she turned around and ran out of the room.

NEXT MORNING
**********************

Kaylan had woken up with a big target in mind – and that was tendering her apology to Lord Xander.

A part of her was telling her not to care about his feelings and just ignore him, but another part kept speaking to her conscience and telling her what she did was wrong and needed an apology.

So, she decided to heed to the second part.

She’d already arranged the flowers the previous night and had them ready for delivery. They were looking so lovely.

“Do you think I should come with you?” Jaden asked from behind as Kaylan stood, admiring the flowers.

“He’s my husband, not OUR husband” Kaylan pointed out, making Jaden laugh.
“I just hope he doesn’t try to act grumpy because I’m definitely going to lose it and smash the entire flowers in his face. I’m trying so hard to be good here”.

“You had better be careful, Kaylan. Don’t do anything to upset him”. Jaden sqid

“Wherever. Wish me luck” Kaylan rolled her eyes and left the room.

She held the flowers carefully as she marched towards Lord Xander’s chambers. And as she did, she kept reciting her apology statement in her mind:

“Oh, Mighty Lord Xander, I’m using this lovely flowers to apologize for what I said yesterday…”

No. That didn’t sound too well to her.

“My dear husband, I want to…”

No! Not husband. He doesn’t even act like a husband.

“You, grumpy man, I hope you can accept these flowers and…”

No; that sounded too rude.
Urgh! What exactly does she say, huh?

Maybe…

“Lord Xander, these flowers are meant to appease you for….”

She suddenly stopped talking when she noticed she’d arrived at Xander’s chambers.
Oops!

It was now or never, Kaylan.

But as usual, there were two guards at the door post and she knew she needed to seek entrance from them.

“Good morning, Princess” they greeted with a bow.

“Oh. Morning to you too. I’m here to…”
Her lips went shut when she saw Xander coming out of the room.
