“My Lord” he bowed.
“Sorry for disturbing, but Princess Kaylan is getting impatient already. She’s requesting to see you and threatens to put up a fight if her request is not granted”.

Xander was quiet for a while, giving a thought to what the guard had said. Well, he had known this would happen, trying to limit her from leaving the house – he’d known she’d grow suspicious and angry.

He exhaled lightly, unveiled the second plate of his meal and turned to the guard.

“I’ll be there” he stated in his deep baritone tone and the guard bowed with gratitude.

“Thank you, My Lord” he said and left.

“I don’t think it was a good idea being so rude to the guard, Kaylan” Jaden said in the room.
“To me, I think you should’ve just stated your request humbly. I mean, what if Lord Xander gets mad at you for being rude to the guard? What if he…?”

“Will you just keep it shut Jaden?” Kaylan snapped. “I did nothing wrong okay? No matter what, I deserve an explanation for being locked up like a prisoner. I surely don’t deserve this punishment”.

Jaden rolled her eyes and was about saying something when the door suddenly went open with one of the guards coming in. At first, they’d thougt he was coming to pass an information, but not until they saw Lord Xander walking in as well.
What???

Jaden was the first to flinch. He came! He really did show up!

Kaylan stood up from the bed where she’d been sitting as well, having mixed thoughts in her head.
First, she felt surprised that Xander really showed up. And secondly, she felt more anxious to know how their conversation would go.

“Greetings, My Lord” Jaden bowed in obeisance, fiddling with her intertwined fingers.

Xander didn’t even spare her a glance as he only kept his gaze on Kaylan who was staring down at the floor.
His hands were crossed at his back, eyes looking so dark.

“Leave us” the cold words escaped his lips and Jaden didn’t need anyone to tell her she was the one being referred to.

Quickly, she left the room with her head bowed. And the only guard in the room followed right immediately. And finally, it was just Xander and Kaylan left in the room.

While Xander stood like an intimidating leader in the room, Kaylan stood in front of him like a child who was about to get a scold from an elder.

“You said you wanted to see me” Xander finally broke the brooding silence, his words sounding like Kaylan had actually committed an offense.

Kaylan summoned enough courage and took her gaze from the floor.

“I…demand to know why I’m being locked up here” she said, her eyes still unable to stare at him.

Xander – as usual – was silent for a moment

“It’s for the best” he suddenly said and those time around, Kaylan had to look at him.

“The best?” She asked with a crumpled look.
“I don’t… I don’t understand. What do you mean it’s for the best?”

Xander took in a light breath and moved an inch.

“I’m trying to protect you, Kaylan. Going out there isn’t safe for you” he said, but Kaylan didn’t seem to buy.

“Really? And it has to get to the extent of locking me up entirely, I can’t even go out to get my own meal? Who exactly are you trying to protect me from in the first place? And are you trying to say they’re here, in the palace? So, why aren’t you being locked up in your room as well??”
Kaylan was beginning to notice some slight changes in Xander’s eyes. Obviously, he didn’t like being challenged.

“Stop yelling at him Kaylan, he might get so angry”. A voice whispered in her head.

Xander’s dark eyes only glinted a little.

“I don’t think you should have a problem with you staying all day in your room, Kaylan” he said. “You should be comfortable here. You have everything you need and will be given everything you ask for”.

He turned towards the door to leave.

“What exactly is going on??” Kaylan didn’t realize when she yelled
“Don’t I even deserve to know?? Tell me what you’re hiding or, I swear, I’m leaving this place!”

Xander snapped and turned to look at her. His hands were still resting at his back.

“I need something from your Father, something that would be of great importance to my community. And I need to keep you here to make sure he gives it to me”. Xander finally told her the truth, stating it matter-of-factly.

Kaylan’s eyes dimmed with comprehension immediately, her lips parted slightly in surprise.
Good saviors! She gasped.

Her eyes starred at Xander’s cold face before going down to the floor. She was a bait! A bait! She was being used as a bait!

For the savior’s sake!!

Now, she understood everything! Now, the entire thing became crystal clear to me. She was being locked up in her room because her father was being blackmailed!! Her life was under a threat and she completely had no idea!

She flinched and looked up at Xander – slowly

“I can’t believe this” she shook her head, the words coming out in whispers.
“I can’t believe this. How dare you use me as a bait against my own father?!”

Xander said nothing, and coldly, he turned around to leave but Kaylan went after him.

“No! You can’t do this to me!! I can’t let you do this to me! You can’t treat me this way!” She rasped as she tried walking pass him to the door, but he pulled her back – so effortlessly.

“You need to stay put” he faciled.

“No! Don’t even tell me to stay put! How can you do this to your own wife?? How dare you use me as a bait?!”
She was already at the verge of tears. But Xander, his expression was as blank as always.

Kaylan tried going out again but still, he pushed her back, restricting her.

“Don’t make me hurt you” his voice came as a mumble.

“You’re so heartless!!” Kaylan cried out, hitting him lightly on the chest.
“Now I know why you’re so unfortunate to lose all your wives!!”

Silence.

It happened so fast; so fast, Kaylan didn’t realize when the words left her mouth. And by the time she did, it was already too late to take them back.

She felt her heart leap a lightly as it suddenly seemed like some ice water had been poured on her.

And Xander – for the first time since she’s known him, she saw his eyes droop right in front of her. Despite how strong he was, those particular words seemed to have melted him.

There was a glint in his eyes as he stared at the floor for the first time, despondency smelling all around him.
And silently, with his eyes still on the floor, he turned around and left.

“No matter what, it shouldn’t come to this! He shouldn’t think of this!”

King Moreh paced around angrily. Thinking Lord Xander could even attempt such a thing is so alarming to him already.

They were having some communal disputes that needed one to bow, and Xander decided to act tricky by using Kaylan as a bait against him. How dare he??

The members of the cabinet were all staring keenly, each wondering what the King’s decision could possibly be.

“Your Highness” one of the members suddenly called after a while, his Head bowed but his beady eyes stealing glances at the King who was still pacing around.

“Signing this petition will be of great defeat to us. It’d only signify weakness, not to mention the disadvantages that would come along with it”.

“But the Princess’ life is at stake as well” someone else said.
“We all know what’s in the letter. Lord Xander has threatened to kill her and we all know he’s never a man to bluff. If there’s one thing he enjoys, it’s killing daily”.

There was a brief pause.

“If we’re to weigh the circumstances, we’ll be talking about just the princess and the entire Kingdom” another member of the cabinet said.
“By signing this partition, we’ll be signing a quarter of our property to The Xander community. It’s too outrageous. Think about the occupants of those areas. They all would have to relocate and look for somewhere else to stay. That would be too inconveniencing, Your Highness, and I’m pretty sure the people won’t be so happy with your decision”

The entire condition had gotten worst as King Moreh was in deep thougts. What sort of temptation is this? He had to chose between Kaylan and his people? For what reason?

Princess Kaylan was beginning to feel restless already. It was almost evening yet, the guards still wouldn’t let her leave the room. Even when she’d tried using the pretence of being hungry and wanting to get a meal, they still wouldn’t her out and had ordered some maids to get her food instead. She couldn’t understand what was going on any more.

She stood up from the bed where she’d been sitting the whole time and began pacing tho and fro the room, her index finger touching her teeth. Something wasn’t right; definitely not right.

“What do you think could be going on, Kaylan?” Jaden suddenly asked.
She’d been standing and leaning against the wall.
“I don’t know, but I just feel something fishy is actually going on”. She added.

Her words only worsened Kaylan’s condition as she grew more suspicious. Then finally, she walked to the door, opened it and still found the guards there

“I need to speak to Lord Xander” she demanded, her eyes looking more serious than the guards had formerly seen.

The two guards glanced at each other.

“I’m afraid you can’t do that at the moment, Princess ..”

“Why?” Kaylan cut him off brusquely. “Am I gradually becoming a prisoner or something? Well, if I am, I’d suggest you tell me to my face!”

The guards said nothing and Kaylan made another attempt to go pass the door, but they stopped her.

“If I can’t leave the room, then let me speak with him at least! I deserve his attention! One of these must happen, well unless you’re ready to beat me up because I’m definitely leaving this room this minute if you don’t go to call him!” She rasped.
The guards could see her damn serious she was. Sticking to their will wasn’t a problem, but they’ve heard about the Princess and how stubborn she was and knew she was indeed, ready to put up a fight if they don’t give her what she wants. Of course, they were sure to defeat her in the fight, but they were only scared of hurting her in the process.

“I’ll get the Master”. The first guard suddenly said, bowed and left, while Kaylan returned to the room.

Lord Xander had just returned from the field where he’d been supervising the training of some of his men and as soon as he stepped into the room, he took a cold bath and changed into one of his causal robes.

Few minutes later, Axel walked in and announced the arrival of the chief cook with his meal.

“Let her in” Xander replied and Axel bowed and left afterwards.

Shortly, the chief cook entered with the big round tray containing the covered dishes. Hilda – she’s always been the one to serve Xander’s meal because shes always wanted to ensure a neat job.

“Greetings, My Lord” she greeted with a bow before dropping the tray on a table.

“You can leave” Xander Said without looking at her and without hesitation, Hilda bowed and left.

He was standing in front of his big desk, trying to check out some scrolls. But realizing he was a bit tired, he decided to have his meal first. That’d be the first meal he’d be having for the day.

So, he walked over to the meal, sat in front of it and was about unveiling it when Axel walked in again.

“My Lord”he bowed.
“Sorry for interrupting, but one of the guards assigned to guard princess Kaylan’s room is here to see you”.

Xander hesitated a little, just staring down at the covered meals.

“Let him in” he finally said, icily and Axel bowed and left with the second guard coming in right immediately.

“My Lord” he bowed.
“Sorry for disturbing, but Princess Kaylan is getting impatient already. She’s requesting to see you and threatens to put up a fight if her request is not granted”.

Kaylan and Jaden were both lying on a bed, staring up at the ceiling as they are some apples while talking about Kaylan’s horrible experience at the festival.

“So .. you mean, you’d have been the one dead if Nivea hadn’t taken the drink in your place?” Jaden asked, still finding the whole thing amusing.
The entire story was nearly too hard to believe.

“Seriously, Jaden. I’m still in shock. I mean, that drink was for me. Yet,take a look at what happened. Honestly, I felt so terrible for her. She was such a nice person”. Kaylan stated bleakly, reminiscing on how nice Princess Nivea had really been.

“I’m actually thinking…one of Xander’s enemies is behind this, you know? Else, why would anyone try to kill you? This is the first time an attempt is being made on your life, right?” Jaden asked.

“That’s correct. But in the first place, why would anyone want to kill me? I might be married to Xander, but it doesn’t mean I’m Xander himself. If they’re having any issues with him, they should make attempts to kill him, not me”. Kaylan answered sarcastically and Jaden slapped her arm.

“What is wrong with you, Kaylan?! You’re so unbelievable” she frowned and Kaylan chuckled

“I’m just joking anyways. But on a more serious note, Jaden, this isn’t fair. I didn’t chose to be his wife in the first place, you know?” She rolled her eyes.
“And by the way, Nivea had said something else to me – something more disturbing. You know her sister was Xander’s second wife. So, I’d asked her how she died and guess what she told me?”

Jaden sat up immediately, finding the story really amusing as she’d always wanted to know the mystery behind the death of Xander’s wives

“These were her words: avoid getting pregnant for Lord Xander”. Kaylan completef and sat up as well.

“Whaaat??” Jaden shirked.
“You mean she actually told you that? What could that possibly mean?”

“I don’t know, Jaden. I was about asking her for more details before the poison started taking effect in her body and she bursted out coughing and spitting blood. So, I couldn’t get more of what she meant”. She replied.

For a while, the two ladies were silent, just thinking deep about it.

“Don’t you think it’s high time we started making some research Kaylan, and know what the problem really is?” Jaden broke the silence.
“I mean, it’s obvious there’s a mystery behind the death of the previous wives and I think we really need to find them out so we can know if we’re to get a solution or something. We shouldn’t just sit idle and wait for death to come up on you or something”.

“But what should I do, Jaden? What can we do? You should know they handle those matters with deep secrecy”. Kaylan grouse and Jaden placed her hands on her jaw for a while.

“Come on; I think I have an idea. Come with me” she stood up from the bed and started towards the door, and of course, Kaylan followed immediately

“Hold on; where are we going?” Kaylan asked as they walked towards the door.

“We need to ask questions, Kaylan. We could meet some older people and ask questions. I’m sure we’ll get what we’re looking for” Jaden replied

They got to the door and opened it and to their surprise, found two armed guards on each side, like they were guarding it.
Oh… since when were guards assigned to her room – Kaylan thought.

She exchanged glances with Jaden.

“Um… hi” Jaden smiled at the guards who weren’t even looking at them as she stepped out of the room.
But when Kaylan tried stepping out as well, the guards snappily turned to look at her, blocking her way.

“I’m sorry, My Princess, but you’re not permitted to go out of your room” The first guard said, his eyes focused and almost stood like a statue.

Kaylan was gobsmacked. What the heck was he talking about?? She wasn’t permitted to go out of the room? Why?

She looked at Jaden who was equally surprised.

“I don’t understand. Why can’t I leave my room?” She asked with a scoff.

“I have no idea, My Princess. But we’re working on Lord Xander’s orders. He requests you stay indoors for now”. The same guard replied.

Kaylan shook her head dazily and returned to the room, while Jaden followed.

“What’s going on, Kaylan? Why wouldn’t they let us out??” Jaden asked as soon as they stepped out,but Kaylan said nothing as she really had nothing to say.

“Do you think he’s trying to protect you against further attacks? Or…
But that isn’t enough reason to have you locked up in your room and even assign guards at your door post. What do you think is going on, Kaylan?”

“I don’t know, Jaden. You heard what the guard said. I don’t know” Kaylan grumbled as she stared at the floor, deep in thoughts.

“Nonsense!” King Moreh roared as he stood up from his throne, his mighty robe swaying along with him while holding the scroll in his hand.
“This is nonsense!”

“Your Highness…”

“No, he has no right! He has no right, no matter what, to use my daughter as a bait to make me sign the God-damn petition! How can he even think I’d make such a decision that wouldn’t be favorable to my own people? How can he even think of forcing me against my will?? Using my daughter as a bait??” His voice thundered up, his eyes adjusting to his regality.

He couldn’t recall when last he’d been so angry.

His members of the cabinet were standing before him, nearly speechless.

“You need to calm down, your Highness. I’m sure we’ll find a way around this” One of them summoned up something to say.

“And what could we possibly do??? You should know Xander to be a man of his words! How dare he try to coerce me into doing something I don’t wish to do?? How can he threaten the life of my daughter?? No matter what, it shouldn’t come to this! He shouldn’t think of this!”
